Youth Orchestra of the Rockies

YOR logoThank you for your interest in the Youth Orchestras of the Rockies! It is our mission, through the study and performance of orchestral music, to build community and to enrich the lives of young musicians.

New this year: The YOR is now administered by the Colorado Chamber Orchestra. Music Director Thomas A. Blomster and Ms. Noriko Nikki Tsuchiya are handling all administrative duties for the YOR.

2014/2015 tentative:

1. For the fall concert I have programmed Beethoven Symphony No. 8, which is scored for a standard chamber orchestra. Other works will also be for chamber orchestra.

2. While we will still have an open rehearsal at the beginning of the fall and spring semester, we will have seating auditions following the open rehearsal.

3. Dates for the 2014/15 season:

August 24: open rehearsal

September 7: seating auditions

September 14: weekly rehearsals begin

November 23, 4:00 PM: Fall concert at UCA

January 11: open rehearsal

January 18: seating auditions if needed, otherwise weekly rehearsals begin

May 9 (Saturday), 2:00 PM: Spring Concert, UCA

There will be breaks for Spring break and Easter, of course.

For seating auditions, we require one major and one minor scale, two octaves, students choice which scales to perform. Also prepare a solo piece and be prepared to play a minimum of one – two minutes of the solo piece. It’s fine if it is a piece the student is already familiar with.

TUITION: There is a non-refundable registration/music fee of $25 per student. The tuition is $65 per month. There are 3 months of rehearsals during the fall semester for a total of $195.00 and 4 months of rehearsals during the spring for a total of $260.00. You may pay by the month or for each semester. Please make checks out to: Youth Orchestra of the Rockies.

We are still accepting new members on all instruments. Please bring your friends! Please call or email if you have further questions or concerns.

  1. I am interested in finding out more about the youth orchestra for my son, who plays the viola. He is in 6th grade and is currently part of the advanced orchestra at Preston Middle School. He has been studying with Sue Temple and has participated in the Just Chamber Music summer program for two years.

If you can let me know about rehearsal times, performance schedules, and audition requirements, I’d appreciate it.

    Thank you.

    • Hello Yat-Yee,

The YOR rehearses during the school year on Sunday afternoons from 3 – 5:30 PM. We start late August and go to end of November, and then take a break for December, then restart in January and go until beginning of May. There are usually two performances, one at end of Fall session, the other at the end of Spring session, all at the UCA. Auditions are held in the fall, usually after the first open rehearsal. Scales and a solo piece the student knows are the requirements for the audition.

If you have further questions and/or would like us to be in touch with you when we announce the Fall session this summer, please send an email to me at: yormusicdirector@gmail.com

      Best regards,

    • Hello Yat-Yee,

Here is a bit more information about the YOR for the 2014/15 season.

Also prepare a solo piece and be prepared to play a minimum of one – two minutes of the solo piece. It’s fine if it is a piece the student is already familiar with. I don’t want the seating audition process to be too intimidating :).

      • Thank you for the additional information.

When you say, seating auditions “following the open rehearsal”, do you mean on the same day, or do you mean the Sunday following the first rehearsal?

So if I understand correctly, my son should plan to attend the open rehearsal (as an observer or player?) and turn up the following week for seating auditions?

        Thank you.
